More important than Boxing Day or the start of Kwanzaa, today is Lil-O’s birthday!

I can’t believe my mischievous little boy is already four years old. It feels like just yesterday when he was yanked out of my uterus…

For breakfast, I slurped down a bowl of hearty beef and root vegetable soup before heading to CrossFit Palo Alto for the women’s class.

There were only two of us in class today, so K and I got lots of personal attention from Coach Trish. Plus, it was exciting to witness K hit a deadlift PR at 205#. Very inspiring.

After restocking on protein and produce at Trader Joe’s, I came home and did some cooking. I roasted an eggplant and some garlic cloves…

….to make eggplant caviar…

…and blended up some magic powder (a.k.a. porcini seasoning salt) for my spice rack.

By lunchtime, I was too lazy to make anything new. I ended up eating the eggplant caviar with some leftover chili lime chicken wings.

In the afternoon, Fitbomb and I spent one-on-one time with the boys. While Fitbomb played Ninjago with Lil-O, I accompanied Big-O to the park where he schooled me on how to properly perform toes-to-bar and knees-to-elbows.

Big-O: “Mommy, you just throw your feet up to the bar like this. How come you can’t do it?”

Me: *shrug*

The rest of our day was spent doing the bidding of the birthday boy. As a result, we ate an early dinner at The Counter. I had a burger in a bowl with greens, unripe tomatoes, and hard-boiled eggs.

Then, we went to the theater to watch The Adventures of Tintin with the kids.

Happy birthday, my little man!

About Michelle Tam

Hello! My name is Michelle Tam, and I love to eat. I think about food all the time. It borders on obsession. I’ve always loved the sights and smells of the kitchen. My mother was (and is) an excellent cook, and as a kid, I was her little shadow as she prepared supper each night. From her, I gained a deep, abiding love for magically transforming pantry items into mouth-watering family meals.
