Easy homemade sweet potato fries

I love me some regular French fries, but I find myself making these crispy sweet potato fries at home more often because they’re so easy and delicious! They’re my favorite veggie side dish when I’m serving homemade burgers at home.

You can totally switch up the seasonings and your taste buds won’t get bored!

Ingredients

A pile of garnet yams or red fleshed sweet potatoes on a stainless steel counter.
  • Garnet yams/sweet potatoes: My favorite sweet potatoes are the orange fleshed garnet ones. They’re the perfect balance of sweetness and get nice and crispy on the outside!
  • Avocado oil, extra virgin olive oil, or melted coconut oil: Don’t skimp on the fat on these baked fries, they’re the key to the crispness! However, if you’re air frying the sweet potato fries, it’s okay to just coat them with avocado oil spray.
  • Diamond Crystal kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Smoked paprika: I love simply seasoning the sweet potato fries with this smoky spice, but feel free to change it up! Ground cinnamon works well, too!

How to make sweet potato fries

Heat the oven to 375°F on convection bake (or 400°F in a non-convection oven).

Peel the sweet potatoes and slice them into even matchsticks.

Sweet potatoes cut unto matchsticks.

Place them in a single layer on a foil- or parchment-lined rimmed baking sheet (parchment paper will yield a crisper exterior) and toss the yams with your fat of choice, salt, pepper, and smoked paprika.

Sweet potato fries are in a single layer in a parchment lined rimmed baking sheet about to be baked in the oven.

Pop the fries in the oven for about 30 minutes, flipping the frites and rotating the tray halfway through. When the fries are tender in the middle and browned on the edges, plate them up and dig in!

Air fryer sweet potato fries

If you want to cook these fries in the air fryer, preheat the air fryer to 375°F. Coat the sweet potato fries with avocado oil spray and sprinkle on the seasonings. Place the fries in a single layer in the air fryer and cook for 15 to 20 minutes or until the fries are cooked through and crispy on the outside. Make sure to shake the air fryer basket every 8 minutes or so to ensure even cooking.
