After having a house full of people this morning, I didn’t want to cook dinner tonight. Plus, we had a ton to clean up and I just wanted to escape our house. We asked the birthday boy where he wanted to eat and he told us, “The place with the fans.” That’s code for Mayfield Bakery & Café.

Our dining experiences here have been hit or miss. The food is normally tasty but the service can vacillate between competent and downright terrible. Before stepping in the door, I had my fingers AND toes crossed.

Fitbomb and I started our dinner by sharing a Little Gem Salad with grapefruit and grilled Gulf shrimp.

Next, we both ordered grilled Escolar with grilled cauliflower and arugula…

…and shared some roasted carrots…

…and sautéed broccolini.

The food and service were pretty good – up until the point when Condoleeza Rice showed up as a diner. Then, we were basically forgotten. When we finally ordered dessert, our birthday boy’s beignets were gooey in the middle. Sigh.

About Michelle Tam

Hello! My name is Michelle Tam, and I love to eat. I think about food all the time. It borders on obsession. I’ve always loved the sights and smells of the kitchen. My mother was (and is) an excellent cook, and as a kid, I was her little shadow as she prepared supper each night. From her, I gained a deep, abiding love for magically transforming pantry items into mouth-watering family meals.
