Giveaway Time! Win A MILKimchi Sampler & T-shirt!
**UPDATE ON 10/19/12: THE CONTEST IS OVAH! CONGRATS TO ANN K.!**
Think you can get your fill of probiotics only from yogurt and sauerkraut? Think again!
From the country that brought us Gangnam Style comes one of my favorite fermented foods — KIMCHI! And my favorite purveyor is Mother In Law’s Kimchi (MILKimchi), which hand-makes and packs this tangy and spicy condiment in New York...

Easiest Roast Chicken Ever
…especially if you live near a Trader Joe’s.
TJ’s has been in California for almost half a century, but in recent decades, stores have been sprouting up all over the U.S. Each store opening has been met with rabid excitement, and it’s not hard to see why. As Fortune Magazine once put it, ”Trader Joe’s is no ordinary grocery chain. It’s an offbeat, fun...

Paleo Eats: 10/11/12
As you may have noticed, I haven’t documented my daily eats in a couple of days ‘cause I’ve been trying to squeeze in more sleep. It’s a tough proposition; with my crazy work schedule, parenting duties, late-night blogging sessions, and an unhealthy obsession with TMZ, it hasn’t been easy getting enough shut-eye. Still, with just a little bit of effort and...

Slow Cooker Cheater Pork Stew
[UPDATED October 10, 2012: This ain’t a new recipe (it’s from over a year ago), but it continues to be popular and the old photos were all kinds of horrible, so I updated this post with new pics. Enjoy (again!)]
Here’s a quick and satisfying stew that I throw together when I’m uber lazy and tired. In other words, this is a dish I cook on a typical day in the life of Nom Nom Paleo. I...

Pressure Cooker Crispy Potatoes
“But…but…but…potatoes aren’t Paleo!”
Once again, with feeling: It all depends on what you mean when you say “Paleo.” There is, after all, no such thing as one definitive Paleo diet. Potatoes may not have been available to cavemen, but I really don’t care. Historical re-enactment ain’t my cup of tea. (Besides, it’s not like our...

Giveaway Time: A Trio of Cookbooks!
**UPDATE ON 10/9/12 @ 10:15 pm: THE GIVEAWAY IS OVAH! CONGRATS TO CICHLISUITE!**
I’m going to let you in on a secret: When I’m too lazy to take food photos and throw together a new blog post, I host a giveaway. Win-win! (Well, unless you don’t actually win.)
Kidding aside, one lucky reader will receive THREE great cookbooks that run the gamut from Whole30-approved to not...

Up next: Another episode of GARBAGE MEALS!
Sure, “Garbage Meals” sounds harsh and unappetizing, but my second choice was “C.O.R.N. (Clean Out Refrigerator Night) Meals,” and that’s not very Paleo.
Today’s meals perfectly illustrate my approach to maintaining kitchen sanity: (1) stocking up on emergency protein, and (2) utilizing umami to maximize flavor. Just...

Paleo Eats: 10/4/12
With our trip to the snow-capped Rockies already receding into memory, I find myself reminiscing about it with the same fondness I feel for the one and only season of Freaks and Geeks. (I’d be such a proud mama if the Double-Os grew up to be Asian Sam Weirs.) Oh, well. Back to reality.
Since returning from Colorado, I’ve been making up for lost time in the kitchen. I hadn’t...

Final Day In The Rockies & Dinner at The Kitchen...
With our Paleo seminar duties out of the way, we drove to the nearest watering hole in Estes Park to guzzle gallons of NorCal Margaritas. Okay — not exactly. But I wouldn’t be shocked if the Paleo Police spied a half-dozen of us decompressing over plates of greasy Mexican food and sugary piña coladas. Even after Mel, Holly, and I had talked our heads off all day, we happily babbled...

Do It Better! (Our Paleo Seminar)
I spent a fitful Saturday night tossing and turning — and it wasn’t because of the thin air at 8,000 feet above sea level. Our full-day “Do It Better!” Paleo seminar at the YMCA of the Rockies was slated to start in a few hours, and my eagerness to speak to a roomful of Paleo-curious and converts had suddenly turned to white-knuckle fear.
As I lay in bed, it occurred to...

Notes from the Rockies (Part 2)
Cathy Lewis hosted a welcome potluck for us last night, and it was ridiculously great.
First, the jaw-dropping view from her back porch:
And, of course, there was the fabulous company…
…including some unexpected guests.
The Paleo potluck food contributed by Cathy and her friends was incredible — and not just because most of it was inspired by Mel and me!
We had...

Notes from the Rockies (Part 1)
Before even retrieving our luggage from baggage claim, I was texting friends for dining recommendations in Denver.
Kevin suggested that we check out Buckhorn Exchange, Denver’s longest-running steakhouse. The restaurant — which boasts a game-heavy menu — has been serving up meaty fare since 1893(!).
The old-timey atmosphere may seem overly kitschy to some, but we got a kick...

Spicy Pineapple Salsa
When I’m in a hurry to get something — anything — in my belly, I grab some cooked protein (e.g. Slow Cooker Kalua Pig) and top it with a potent flavor booster, like spicy pineapple salsa. This sweet, crunchy, spicy, sour, and juicy condiment elevates everything you spoon it on. Plus, it keeps for a few days in the fridge. Emergency flavor booster + emergency protein = happy...

Paleo Eats: 9/24/12
Just in case I encountered another crazy-busy night shift, I packed a no-frills lunch that I could eat without reheating: smoked wild salmon, leftover greens, tomatoes, and broiled summer squash.
I hate being right. Work was non-stop.
After arriving home, I conked out for a solid 7 hours and 7 minutes, registering a whopping 99% sleep efficiency. How do I know? My FitBit told me so....

Paleo Eats: 9/23/12
Graveyard shifts at the hospital are always unpredictable. Normally, the variety keeps things interesting, but every single night this week, I’ve been stomping out fires for ten hours straight. This old pill pusher’s tired. Calgon, take me away!
I knew I was in for another hectic shift, so I purposely packed food that I could eat straight from the fridge. But it wasn’t until...

Paleo Eats: 9/22/12
Before I recap my chow for the day, I want to wish my dad a happy, happy birthday. I hope my two sons grow up to be just as righteous as my dad. Rock on, pops!
Plus, he has such a snappy sense of style — something that I sadly failed to inherit.
Back at the hospital, chaos reigned. I was almost too busy to eat my leftovers: meat from my beefy bone broth with Leon’s Miracle Sauce,...

Paleo Eats: 9/21/12
As a present to myself, I didn’t post my birthday eats. (Thanks for all your kind birthday wishes, by the way!)
As I get older and more decrepit, birthdays just aren’t as exciting anymore — especially when I have to trudge off to work at night. Still, my family made me feel special, with hand-drawn cards and hugs when I got home. My hubby got me exactly what I wanted — a...

Me? Fashlete of the Month? Wha-?
One of the coolest birthday presents I got today was the honor of being chosen as Fashletics’ September 2012 Fashlete of the Month. Best of all, Sarah Wilson, the badass CrossFitter/metalsmith behind Fashletics, forged me a groovy one-of-a-kind Nom Nom Paleo necklace!
I know — I didn’t expect to be named a “Fashlete” either, especially given that I’m neither...
Paleo Eats: 9/19/12
With the school year in full swing, the boys are constantly bringing home new germs. To combat the inevitable sniffle-assault, I started my morning by cracking through the protective layer of congealed fat atop my refrigerated bone broth…
..to get at the quivery meat Jell-O below.
Once I got the soup steaming hot on the stove, I ladled it into mugs for the whole family. I...

Paleo Eats: 9/18/12
Fried eggs and bacon go together like Howard and Robin in the morning.
I wish I could enjoy all four of them together, but little ears are in the kitchen. Also, my head would explode from the sensory overload.
After I chaperoned Big-O to school and heard all the sniffling in his classroom, I rushed home to start a big pot of pressure cooker bone broth on the stove. I crammed my...
