Paleo Eats: 11/29/11
My morning started waaaay earlier than I would’ve liked when I was woken up by Lil-O’s cries at 3:30 a.m. When I ran to the boys’ room, I discovered that there was a barf explosion in his bed. I’m being a tad dramatic, but I did have to do a load of laundry before heading back to sleep.
When I finally straggled out of bed again, I was too wiped to head to the women’s class at CrossFit Palo...

More of my chow — coming right up!
In the morning, I whipped up some omelets filled with leftover 4505 Meats lamb merguez sausage and nuked frozen broccoli, and I topped each of them with a dollop of homemade guacamole.
Have I mentioned the importance of a good pair of kitchen shears? I use them for everything — quickly dicing veggies (e.g. the nuked frozen broccoli), deboning...

Paleo Eats: 11/27/11
We ventured out of the house today, met some friends at the farmers’ market, cooked up a storm, and invited more friends for dinner. You can tell we’re trying to keep busy, huh?
In the morning, I made an simple frittata with leftover 4505 Meats merguez sausage and frozen broccoli…
…which I split for breakfast with Fitbomb.
Afterwards, I formed the chilled dark...

Paleo Eats: 11/26/11
Today, we pressed the play button and tried to resume our normal routine. The kids had a play date with their friends and I spent the majority of the day tinkering in the kitchen.
For brunch, I sautéed 4505 Meats merguez sausage (out of the casing) with onions…
…and ate it with leftover braised cabbage.
In the afternoon, I cooked up a storm. I think I just wanted to keep my mind...

I’m back, but not quite myself. I feel like someone pressed the pause button on our life, and I’m not yet ready to press play.
Thanks for all your well wishes, kind thoughts, and prayers during this difficult time. For a couple of days, I retired the camera and simply ate my meals without documenting them. It felt so liberating not having to worry about how a dish was plated — plus it was...
I'm On Hiatus
I’m putting this blog on hold for a few days. Please go hug your loved ones and cherish your time together.

Paleo Eats: 11/21/11
Instead of a nursing a huge mug of Philz coffee at the start of my night shift, I sipped from a thermos filled with steaming bone broth. Both beverages warm me up from the inside out, but I don’t get the jitters with the broth. I better stock up on marrow bones ‘cause no one trusts a fidgety drug dealer.
A hot bowl of beef bouillon always reminds me of my mom — who happens to...

Paleo Turkey Day Menu Ideas
Turkey Day is only a few days away…
(Image by SliceOfChic, shared via Flickr.)
Does everyone have their Thanksgiving plans all set? Anybody stuck hosting a house full of people you despise? Sucks to be you.
We’ll be celebrating Thanksgiving at my in-laws’ yearly potluck. I haven’t finalized what I’m bringing but I think I’ll make endive spears stuffed with crab...

Yay! I’m more than halfway through my workweek!
During my graveyard shift, I chowed on two boxes of leftovers: one with a slice of frittata, and the other with roast chicken, cauliflower & carrot puree, and stir-fried pork and spigarello.
While I slept the afternoon away, Fitbomb made himself some bacon-wrapped pineapples chunks.
I sampled a couple when I woke up and each bite was a...

Green Pork & Shiitake Sliders
Here’s another variation on my green sliders — this time with Asian flair, just like me! Seriously, my kids love these portable pucks and it makes me happy that they’re getting veggies and protein in each bite.
Here’s what I assembled to make 30 mini sliders:
1 pound frozen chopped spinach
1 tablespoon coconut oil (or favorite fat)
1/2 cup finely chopped yellow onion...

Another day of eats coming your way…
While most of you were tucked snug in your beds, I was burning the midnight oil at work. I really can’t complain because it wasn’t too busy again. My chow at work was leftover roast chicken, cauliflower & carrot puree, and stir-fried pork and spigarello.
I also chugged a glass of coconut milk but that didn’t keep me from being famished in the...

Paleo Eats: 11/18/11
Like the previous night, there was no room at the inn again but luckily my shift at the hospital wasn’t too crazy. While I was on the clock, I ate a package of spicy grass fed jerky chews, a merguez sausage over a bed of frozen spinach, and leftover lemongrass and coconut chicken thighs with braised cabbage and yam puree.
When I returned home, I was greeted by my smiley boys and the...

Paleo Eats: 11/17/11
The no vacancy sign at the hospital was flashing as I drove in to work and that’s never a good thing. To power me through my shift, I ate a grass fed Paleo Kit and some ground antelope emergency protein with frozen broccoli.
When I came home in the morning, I took the kids to school before dropping the car off at the shop. I was too tired to prep dinner and just went to bed…where I...

Paleo Eats: 11/16/11
My vacation is officially over but I’ve got another one coming up in December so I really can’t kvetch. Plus, I gotta make some money to pay for playtime, nosh, and gadgets. Hey, no one is giving me a free SousVide Supreme Demi package…
This morning I had a ton of crap to do so I didn’t have time to eat breakfast. Before I headed to a parent-teacher conference for Big-O, I threw a tray of braised...

All of us in the Nombomb household were groggy again this morning. Ick. Vacation hangover lasts a loooooooong time.
I loaded up with a sad-looking, solitary scrambled egg fried in butter…
…before heading to the women’s class at CrossFit Palo Alto.
Post-WOD, I ate some canned pumpkin sprinkled with cinnamon along with a few slices of Applegate Farms organic roast beef. I...

Paleo Eats: 11/14/11
Today really felt like Monday, in a sad Carpenters’ song kind of way.
Everybody woke up groggy and I had tons of chores to do before I start work on Wednesday night. Damn you, vacation! It’s almost better not knowing what rest and relaxation really feel like…
In the morning, I gulped down a spinach omelet before hustling Big-O to school.
For lunch, I threw together a quick...

Paleo Eats: 11/12/11 (Departing Maui) & 11/13/11
Our ohana reluctantly packed our stuff and flew off the island yesterday afternoon.
*sniffle*
As is our annual tradition, we stopped for brunch at Mala Ocean Tavern before heading to the airport.
We like to torture ourselves with the tasty food and gorgeous table-side ocean view so we’ll pencil in a return trip next year.
I ordered the Great Start Breakfast with a couple of eggs...

Paleo Eats: 11/11/11 (Maui Day #7)
Man, how does a week pass by so quickly?
For breakfast, I cooked the last of our bacon and veggies, and fried up what was left of the three dozen eggs in our fridge. I picked at the bacon while I was cooking, so by the time I thought to photograph my plate, it was already bereft of bacon.
The rest of our day’s eats were less than stellar because we chose proximity over quality in order...

Paleo Eats: 11/10/11 (Maui Day #6)
We’re so sad that our time in paradise is like sands through the hourglass…
(Days of Our Lives shout-out!)
As a result, we packed a lot of fun activities into our second-to-last full day of vacation.
Before heading to Lahaina CrossFit, Fitbomb and I chowed on some cold, leftover mini burgers and mac nuts. You can read about our workout here.
I’m not crushing on Cindy as...

Paleo Eats: 11/9/11 (Maui Day #5)
Egads! Our Hawaiian vacation is almost over!
Since we’re leaving on Saturday, I tried to cook off a lot of the perishables in our fridge. For breakfast, I fried up two pounds of mini burgers; sautéed cabbage, onions, and Alii mushrooms; and sliced the rest of our tomatoes. I put hubby in charge of mashing up some guacamole and he delivered a big bowl of yumminess, as usual.
In the morning,...

Boy, I’m beat. I’m gonna make this post short ‘cause I wanna catch up on my zzz’s. I am on vacation after all…
For breakfast, I didn’t have to cook! Yippee! Fitbomb’s cousin, D, made us a yummy breakfast of fried eggs…
…sausages…
…and leftover cabbage and beef stir-fry.
My measly contribution to the meal was a simple fruit salad.

4505 Meats Cookbook (+ Other Stuff) Giveaway!
Loyal readers know how much I love San Francisco-based 4505 Meats.
4505 Meats is owned and run by Chef Ryan Farr and his wife, Cesalee. Along with their crew, they’re truly Jedi masters of all things meat. 4505 Meats doesn’t have a storefront or restaurant. Instead, they set up shop at the Ferry Building Farmers’ market every Thursday and Saturday, and hungry carnivores happily queue up...

Paleo Eats: 11/7/11 (Maui Day #3)
Another relaxing day in paradise – made even nicer ‘cause the kids slept in until 6:30 a.m. and more family joined us on vacation.
For breakfast, I made some omelets stuffed with Keoki’s Kalua pork and leftover sautéed spinach and mushrooms.
Then, we wandered to the Farmers Market of Maui…
…before returning to the beach where Fitbomb and I took turns watching the kids...

Eating Out Paleo: Honu Restaurant (Lahaina, HI)
Mala Ocean Tavern is one of our favorite beachfront restaurants in Maui, so we were happy to discover that owner Mark Ellman opened up a new restaurant, Honu, right next door. A bigger restaurant that features local seafood and organic produce— we’re there!
Honu is located in the old Local Motion site but all signs of the former surf shop are long gone. The space now has beautiful...

Cooking Sous Vide: Plastic Safety
You know I love cooking sous vide.
Despite my hectic work schedule and parenting duties — not to mention daily food blogging! — I’m still able to whip up healthy, tasty, perfectly-cooked meals with minimal prep time, thanks in large part to my SousVide Supreme. It’s one of my go-to kitchen appliances, and I’ve developed a number of recipes that call for vacuum-sealing various proteins...

Paleo Eats: 11/6/11 (Maui Day #2)
The Double-O’s were up before sunrise this morning and I, of course, had stayed up really late blogging the previous night. I don’t always like being right.
Today, I cooked all our meals in our less than awesome kitchen. We stayed around the property and played in the surf…
…and splashed in the pool.
The kitchen tools in our place stink — dull knives, cheap...

The Nombomb family is officially on vacation!
As is customary for all our trips, Fitbomb was in charge of packing the clothes and electronics and I packed the toiletries and in-flight snacks. Hubby does the bulk of the packing because his skillz are legendary. Case in point: all our crap for a weeklong vacay fit into two carry-ons and two backpacks – one backpack was even tucked inside a...

Sous Vide Scrambled Eggs
Scrambled eggs are so fast and easy to fry up, it never occurred to me to cook them in my SousVide Supreme. Who wants to wait twenty minutes for eggs to cook – not to mention the additional time it takes for the water oven to preheat? Not this lazy ass!
I finally made a batch today to test out our new reusable silicone cooking bag and I have to tell you, scrambled eggs cooked sous vide are...
Paleo Eats: 11/4/11
I gotta get ready for my trip so this post will be short.
For breakfast, I chowed on bacon, scrambled eggs (fried in bacon grease), and sliced heirloom tomatoes.
Then, I zoomed over to CrossFit Palo Alto and did time trials with the gals in the women’s class. My post workout meal was a packet of spicy grass fed jerky chews and canned pumpkin puree with ground cinnamon, vanilla extract, and...

Sous Vide Grass Fed Beef Tongue 'n Cheek
Never in a million years would I attempt to cook grass fed beef tongue…
…or beef cheeks…
…without my SousVide Supreme.
Nowadays, I’ll confidently tackle any and all unusual slab of meat ‘cause the water oven will magically transform cheap, tough cuts of grass fed meat into tasty fork-tender braises. Yes, you’ve got to do some planning because it normally...

Paleo Eats: 11/3/11
It finally feels like autumn in the Bay Area, especially with the blustery winds whipping crispy, dead leaves into our entryway. It’s the perfect weather for sleeping during the day – but there’s no way in hell I’m regretting taking PTO.
For breakfast this morning, I ate a French omelet with leftover mini burgers and sliced tomatoes.
I also chowed on a handful of macadamia nuts before heading...

Paleo Eats: 11/2/11
Although I’ve been on vacation for a week already, I truly felt like I was on PTO today. It was so liberating not rushing around like a maniac since I wasn’t starting a week of nightshifts.
Instead, I leisurely savored a frittata made with leftover oven-roasted tomatoes and sauteed baby kale. With no kids screeching in my ear, I totally enjoyed the silence.
Also, I seasoned and...

Happy day after Halloween! Look at all them ones in the date!
Today my eats were not well planned at all. If I didn’t have an emergency stash of Sophia’s Survival Food or Primal Pacs in my bag, I’d be one hangry mommy.
My chow started off promising — I made myself a French omelet that I devoured with some leftover roasted tomatoes and sauteed baby dino kale…
